ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING

April 10, 1999 was our first WMMS meeting at the Senior Center in Ludington. Twenty members and guests were present.

Several members told of their experiences during the winter. Jay and Chuck Martz were in Texas and visited S. Padre Islands, several museums and had a very interesting trip. Loretta Gunberg took a mushroom dying class in Columbia, MO and brought samples of the wool in various colors. Glenna Paukstis went to Arizona to an elder hostel class where she learned about the natives and panned for gold.

Ray Gustafson expressed his interest in a poison support group and in getting more information to the schools and hospitals. He also suggested getting a new membership list out.

There was a discussion about buying a microscope and if it should be kept at the extension office.

Mae Paukstis donated many mushroom books to the club and they are being kept at the Schrader's. Milda suggested moving them to the extention office inScottville. A motion was passed to try it for a year.

A tentative foray schedule was planned, officers elected and committees formed - covered later in this issue. Coffee and cookies were served.

MOREL FORAY

This year's morel foray will again be held at Eden Twp Hall at 9:00am on Saturday, May 1. We will head for the woods and hopefully fill our onion sacks with the timid morsels before returning to the Hall for a potluck dinner and educational session. Bring a dish to pass, your own table service and beverage of your choice. For collecting, bring a basket or mesh bags (like those that hold oranges or onions) so that the spores can fly free as you walk, helping to seed future fungi. Also reccommended are a loud whistle, compass, knife, walking stick and field guides.

DIRECTIONS:

From Ludington and points north: take US 10 to Custer and turn south on Custer Road (by the cow head). Travel 5-1/2 miles to Hawley Rd. and turn left (east). The Hall is on the south (right) side just over a mile up the road.

From the south: take US 31 north to the first Ludington exit (Old Highway 31/Pere Marquette Rd.). Turn right on Pere Marquette and travel 2-1/2 miles south to Hawley Rd.. There is an old schoolhouse on the SE corner. Turn left (east) on Hawley and go about 9 miles to the Hall.

EARLY MUSHROOMS

Mary Bulow found oyster mushrooms in January while visiting her son in Bowie, MD. It had been rainy with mild temperatures in the 50s and 60s... first found them along the highway and later found them along a bike trail on dead oaks. (Ed. Note: we usually see them here on aspen in the spring and later in the year on maple). They were light tan and very good.

FIRST REPORTED '99 MOREL

The first reported morel this year comes from our star student Nancy Rossi. The report says she found a few on April 7. She also reports finding several more on April 13 which is still early. These were of various shapes , sizes and color shades. We are used to the variations in the size and shapes of the early Morchella angusticeps, conica, elata complex, but a few of these were light in color (I call it ice color) and had a spherical cap. They resembled the ones Betty Polverento (another record holder) found a few years back in a pine plantation "by the hundreds". We have found similar ones, Morchella deliciosa, which were round but never this early in the season. If anyone recognizes this as a new species rather than another variation, clue us in. Until that time, I'll refer to it as Morchella rotunda.
