2000 Morel Foray |
|
This year's morel foray will again be held at Eden Twp Hall at 9:00am on Saturday, April 29. We will head for the woods and hopefully fill our onion sacks with the timid morsels before returning to the Hall for a sack lunch and educational session.
For collecting, bring a basket or mesh bags (like those that hold oranges or onions) so that the spores can fly free as you walk, helping to seed future fungi. Also reccommended are a loud whistle, compass, knife, walking stick, field guides, and paper lunch bags to isolate other specimens from your edibles. The area we will be hunting in has some potential for getting directionally challenged (PC for lost), so you'll want to stick with someone who has a compass and whistle just in case. The weather has been good and people are finding lots of small to medium black morels as this goes to press, so out timing is good this year.
DIRECTIONS:
From Ludington and points north: take US 10 to Custer and turn south on Custer Road (by the cow head). Travel 5-1/2 miles to Hawley Rd. and turn left (east). The Hall is on the south (right) side just over a mile up the road.
From the south: take US 31 north to the first Ludington exit (Old Highway 31/Pere Marquette Rd.). Turn right on Pere Marquette and travel 2-1/2 miles south to Hawley Rd.. There is an old schoolhouse on the SE corner. Turn left (east) on Hawley and go about 9 miles to the Hall.
